  • Heavy but well built old camera

Positives: These were very expensive when new ( around £400-500) but can now be purchased for a very low price. It is a heavy item with a great feel of quality about it. It also has a comprehensive range of controls including the ability to save shots in RAW format if you wish. Quality is excellent. and the lens very good. It also has a zoom linked optical viewfinder to help conserve the battery by switching off the screen. Canon Computer software and consumables are all still available on the web Middles:4 mp does not seem a lot but the quality is more than adequate for normal photographs providing you give a little thought to framing as you don't have the same cropping headroom as you do with a modern 12 mp plus camera. CF cards work fine but are becoming dated now. You can use it straight away on auto but it will repay time getting familiar with a few basic settings to get the best out of it. Original batteries will be past their best by now so expect to buy a new one. Negatives: as with most cameras from this era the display is small so you may need to wear reading glasses to see it clearly. It will shoot movies but they are not really up to par, useful to document as an aide memoire but not to any artistic standard In Use: The camera is switched on by sliding the lens cover, use gentle pressure when closing and give the camera a second or so to retract its lens and it should be perfectly durable. Anything remotely close (within a meter or less) requires pressing the macro mode button to focus properly. Try to get a camera with the handbook and USB transfer cable as the camera uses CF cards which are not as robust as SD cards at being removed and replaced to and from a reader. It will fit a jacket pocket but is bulkier and heavier than later products. Sum up: A great little camera if you have some ability as a photographer, but needs a little patience. Not a point and shoot to give to children nor quick snaps at dinner parties etc'
