SynopsisRevisit Scorsese's neo-noir masterpiece in this photographic ode to Taxi Driver, composed of on-set and behind-the-scenes images by the unit photographer, the legendary Steve Schapiro. Recording all the iconic moments and the intricate making of this cult movie, this XL publication is a whole new artwork: with hundreds of unseen images, it is a..., Taxi Driver has long been regarded as a cinematic milestone, and Robert DeNiro's portrait of a trigger-happy psychopath with a mohawk is widely believed to be one of the greatest performances ever filmed. Time magazine includes the film in its list of 100 Greatest Movies, saying: "The power of Scorsese's filmmaking grows ever more punishing with the passage of time."Steve Schapiro--whose photographs were featured in TASCHEN's Godfather Family Album--was the special photographer on the set of Taxi Driver, capturing the film's most intense and violent moments from behind the scenes. This book--more than a film-still book, rather a pure photo book in its own right--features hundreds of unseen images selected from Schapiro's archives, painting a chilling portrait of a deranged gunman in the angry climate of the post-Vietnam era. • An essential addition to the study of Scorsese's filmmaking.

A beautiful and comprehensive exploration of a seminal 70's Scorsese film, the one which put himself, DeNiro, Keitel, and Jodie Foster into the realm of giants (and don't forget Peter Boyle!). Lavishly illustrated on heavy, glossy pages, these on-set photos are as well composed and lit as any shots in the film itself. Schapiro obviously had total access, and it's a wonder this generous collection of photos and other materials languished unpublished for such a long time. Would that Scorsese allows publication of further books documenting in detail like this the making of some of his other masterpieces : "King of Comedy," "Mean Streets," "Goodfellas,"or even, how about "Hugo"? Let's hope Taschen, which has been so good to Stanley Kubrick's legacy, will continue this type of book in a continuing series. JW
