TAKIN' OFF (1962), Herbie Hancock's debut as a leader, holds up exceptionally well decades after its release, even in light of the vast, eclectic, and excellent solo catalogue that followed. The Rudy Van Gelder remaster, released in 2007, brings this classic back in glorious clarity.

NotesLimited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. On his debut album Takin' Off-recorded and released in 1962-jazz legend Herbie Hancock arrived fully formed at the helm of an impressive quintet with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Billy Higgins. Though rooted firmly in hard bop, the brilliant pianist and composer presented his own strikingly original voice on this 6-song album consisting entirely of his own compositions from the funky hit "Watermelon Man" to the timeless ballad "Alone and I."
I’m thankful that many of the classic jazz recordings are being rereleased on 180 gm. Vinyl. Audiophiles have known for years that vinyl with good turntables and cartridges give superior lifelike sound.
If you like to sit and listen to music get the best setup you can afford and enjoy.
