About this product

Product Information

A graceful, illuminating study of the wisdom of the natural world, from a world-renowned indigenous scientist As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise (Elizabeth Gilbert). Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, a mother, and a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings-asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass-offer us gifts and lessons, even if we've forgotten how to hear their voices. In a rich braid of reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument- that the awakening of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return.

  • "Braiding Sweetgrass" is a human action symbolic of community- with all of life. The whole book is about that.

“Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. It’s all about our personal relationship to nature. We share the world with the rest of nature. All of nature, including the non-human manifestations of life, was here before us. We are new partners. The rest are our brothers and sisters who sustain us and we must sustain them in reciprocity and gratitude. The author is a plant scientist and university professor who found that her native American heritage provides, through tradition, culture and practical ways of living, the right approach for sustaining the world. Thankfulness for what we have will come to people easily if we have a more personal relationship to the other ‘persons’ of our planet. Gratitude is natural. Read the book!

  • Wonderful & well-written

This is one of the most important books I've read. It's well-written & thus easy to read, & absolutely inspiring in its understanding of nature. If we want humanity to survive, we need to learn from Professor Wall Kimmerer's indigenous wisdom & scientific knowledge.

  • Hope and healing for our world

This is a beautifully written book about our wonderful world, and the awful damage done to it through ignorance and greed, and what we can all do to help heal it. I had no idea of the dreadful effect of colonisation and some missionary activity on many of the indigenous peoples of America. Through the book, I learned more about how to respect creation, and work with others to keep us all safe.

Beautifully written exposition of the principles of Native American life and culture, successfully integrating her scientific understanding with traditional wisdom. This book is enlightening and heartwarming, while being scientifically accurate at the same time. A way in to a better understanding of traditional beliefs and knowledge that our modern culture desperately needs.

  • Well worth reading

More literature of this kind is needed. Respect for nature and each other is sadly lacking in our lives - these insights into a simpler, more natural way of being can only bring improvement to modern life.
