Mixed martial arts action drama, starring Nick Nolte and Tom Hardy, in which a fractured family relationship is tested even further when two estranged brothers enter the same prestigious fighting competition. Tommy Conlon (Hardy) and his brother, Brendan (Joel Egerton), are the children of former boxer and recovering alcoholic Paddy Conlon (Nolte) - and both have issues with him. Tommy, tortured by his recent experience as a soldier, reconnects with his father to some extent when he enlists him as his coach for the upcoming Sparta mixed martial arts competition, which Tommy hopes to win in order to be able to give the prize money to the family of a fallen comrade. Brendan, in contrast, needs the money to provide for his wife and children after losing his job.

ReviewsThe A.V. Club - For all its titular bravado, Warrior never lets the audience forget the economic and spiritual desperation driving its two main characters, who bleed for the screaming arena crowd in exchange for their shots at redemption, and offer a rare glimpse of soul in a type of film that usually isn't obliged to provide one., New York Times - It is appropriately blunt, powerful and relentless, a study of male bodies in sweaty motion and masculine emotions in teary turmoil., Hollywood Reporter - It's a long movie that feels short: It grabs you in early scenes, intense though low-key before all hell breaks loose, then keeps you riveted to its mostly male characters., Movieline - One of the most heart-wrenching and deeply felt films of the year., Empire - WARRIOR is a powerful, moving and brilliant sports-pic-cum-family drama. Like "The Fighter," but with kicking.
Additional InformationTwo estranged brothers and Mixed Martial Arts fighters confront the forces that tore their family apart as they prepare to do battle in the ring in this drama from director Gavin O'Connor (PRIDE AND GLORY). Tommy Conlon (Tom Hardy) is an ex-Marine from Pittsburgh who's never quite shaken his troubled past. Upon learning that the purse in an upcoming MMA tournament is the largest in the league's history, Tommy recruits his father (Nick Nolte), a former coach and recovering alcoholic, to whip him into shape in time for the competition. Meanwhile, as Tommy steadily ascends the ranks by defeating one powerful opponent after another, his brother, Brendan (Joel Edgerton), struggles to provide for his family with his job as a public school teacher. A former MMA fighter with a devastating punch, Brendan begins to wonder if he, too, could have a shot at winning the coveted purse. In time, Brendan emerges as a dark horse in the competition, setting the two brothers on a brutal collision course. But Tommy and Brendan's biggest battle won't be fought in the ring -- it will be fought in their hearts and minds.
