The film was loosely based on the story ofGrand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia and the bookThe Riddle ofAnna Anderson by Peter Kurth. Anna Anderson is dragged from a Berlin river in 1919 after a failed suicide attempt.
A huge story about one of the twentieth century's most infamous imposters (alias, Anna Anderson) is reduced down and over-glamourized. The all-star cast makes up for the rather sketchy production, but it's entertaining enough for those who don't know the history. Unfortunately, the beautiful settings are spoiled by the poor quality of the recording/DVD.
