Late 20th C. history of an Iconic Alglo-Kenyan hotel.
Its a 20+ year old book about the history of a Kenyan hotel that has since the writing - changed ownership. So for most of you, the content probably isn't compelling!
But it was also a great eccentric place - with guests bringing their pet cheetas to tea and 1930s Hollywood stars dropping in. For spywatchers, there is also the Safai Club group that met here in 1976 to plan ways to block the advance of communism in Africa (there is of course no contemporaneous reporting of this intelligence services plotting in the book!).
Lots of films got made near there in the great days of Hollywood - so there are plenty of "stars" making their appearances; this might even tempt you to search out the old films on YouTube!
If you remember the place in the 20th century, or have a bent for eccentric travel history, or plan to write a ficticious account of the "Safari Club Spies" then this illustrated book might make make a good read. You won't find this easily - so eBay is a good place to track down a copy.
The book and illustrations are comprehensive, but layout and content can be a bit hit and miss. For travel authors and photographers in search of a project - it needs updating !
My copy was really tatty and damaged - a disgrace for the seller - but I guess most copies were bought after a stay at the hotel and have been in a box in the attic since the travellers returned 30 years ago !!
