It's OK
A young man from up from the Countryside appears in Baker Street early one morning. Holmes immediately detects that he is a Police Constable, despite not been in uniform. The Constable is uneasy and has a strange story to relate, regarding his immediate superior, the Village Police Sargent. While on duty, unknown to his Sargent. The Constable heard a conversation between the Sargent and a prisoner who was been released after a night in the Village jail. This was old man, a non resident of the Village, known for drinking and doing seasonal labour -harvesting. The old Man was rambling kept rambling on remorsefully about his involvement with a murder commited. The Constable was amazed to hear the Sargent ignoring this and basically tellingly the Man to shut up, leave the Village and not come back. The Sargent then releases the Man and calls for the Constable to escort the Man to the village outskirts to ensure he leaves. The Sargent not knowing what the Constable has heard, informs him, that drink is responsible a terrible thing. Later when the Constable is alone on duty he checks the Police log book. There is no mention of the ex Prisoner or the confession of murder by him. This is why he consults Holmes. After further discussion, Holmes learns that a child was found murdered in the Village the year previously at Harvest time. The crime remains unsolved, with Harvest approaching again. The Constable leaves to return to his Village, after Holmes agrees to investigate and follow with Watson the next day. As far as Pastiches go, this is not too bad , unfortunately it starts to become unconvincing towards the end. Frankly, I found the ending unconvincing and absurd. There's nothing compelling or taxing. This is not an unpleasant read by any means to pass a few hours.
