Damaged. But still worth it?
Obviously buying a damaged cello has its risks. This one had an extensive crack running along its front on the sound post side. The wood had separated, so not a surface crack, but one which would have made most people hesitate before purchase. Yet the wood is spruce, fingerboard ebony, pegs and tailpiece jojoba I believe, and it comes with a semi rigid case and bow. The cost of a professional repair would not make the purchase viable, but with careful glueing and clamping it now plays pretty well to my amateur ears, and I am pleased with my purchase. It would have been a shame to have scrapped this instrument and used it for its parts. It wouldn't fool anyone, the join is still visible if you look for it, but horses for courses. I'm not a professional.
