  • Does work but has a fault that can be worked around.

This is quite an old product and this one like most of its era is second user equipment. Generally this is quite a good meter from a reputable make and it does the job. Over the years this is the third one of these that I have owned. The first I bought from new many years ago and the second I still have and still works well, Unfortunately this third one is not the best of its kind. Superficially it appeared to be in good condition, but on power-up a checksum error appeared. Nevertheless it does work normally when this is cleared. In order to try to cure the fault I removed the stick-on front panel to gain access to the internals. Inside I found that the backup battery had corroded, taking with it some of the printed board contacts. I replaced the battery and contacts, but the checksum error still persists. It's not really a big deal but would like to cure it if possible. On this basis I have to give it a minus for quality.

  • Robust machine, still a worthwhile PAT tester despite its age

This PAT tester is as old as the hills now - I think mine hails from the 1990s. But it is built to last (to put it very mildly!) and it is dead easy to use. Basic by modern standards but - bonus - no "nag" screens, just straight into testing. Speaking of which, this will do earth bond (4 - 25A iirc) and earth continuity (200mA) tests, as well as insulation test, load / leakage test and IEC lead test (including polarity). The only thing conspicuously missing is a reduced voltage insulation test. There's no flash test either, but that isn't a commonly used test unless you repair things. [If you need flash test, consider the PAT 1000 S which also turns up at keen prices.] Overall, if you can get one at a good price (and you're prepared to take a modest risk on it working, and to pay to get it calibrated), this is a worthwhile tester which will do most of what modern machines do.
