About this product

Product Information

The Konica Minolta 70-210 mm f/4.0 AF is a popular telephoto lens from the Maxxum series. It's a well-designed lens with high-quality optics and a durable build. With a solid metal body, enamel finish, and die-cast metal components, the construction is distinctive and stable. Capture detailed portraits and expansive landscapes with the same versatile lens. These Minolta AF lenses offer a zoom range of 70 mm to 210 mm and a minimum focal distance of 1.1 meters. At this distance, each photo you capture with your SLR can look extremely sharp. The optics on this lens are constructed of twelve elements in nine groups. It also consists of seven diaphragm blades that help to keep the picture frame steady and the results spectacular. This zoom lens is compatible with the Minolta Maxxum and Sony Alpha cameras. With a 3x zoom range, you can focus on long-distance objects. If you have a filter or other accessory that you want to add to this Minolta zoom lens, it's compatible with 55 mm thread sizes. These telephoto lenses rest at a constant aperture of f/4. One of the highlights of this Minolta Beercan is that zooming is 100% internal. Aside from the zooming ring, no other portion of this lens moves when using this feature. This item is specifically compatible with the Sony A-mount. While this full-frame device works well when you wish to use manual focus, it can also be operated via autofocus. These Beercan lenses weigh around 25 ounces, which shouldn't add much overall weight to an SLR camera. The glass itself is treated with a wide array of coatings that are designed to improve light quality as it passes through and to reduce distortions. One of the primary distortions that reduced with this item is that of chromatic aberration. Because of this, each photo you take will benefit from fantastic sharpness and clarity. Other distortions like flare are also kept to a minimum.Minolta models are known for their warm and appealing colors, which is evident in this model. The color spectrum of the photos is vibrant and natural, no matter which camera it's used with. This item is very versatile, so it can be used for many types of photography. However, it's particularly useful for sports and portraits. Given that this is a full frame device, capturing wide pictures is possible.Poor lighting is handled very well in the optics of this lens, so it can be operated for nighttime photography and on cloudy days. When using the autofocus feature, there's little to no noise, so neither you nor the wildlife that you are trying to capture will be distracted when lining up the perfect shot. The hood for this item protects the glass from damage when not in use. At longer focal lengths, the bokeh effect produced by this Konica Minolta AF item is a noted feature. The blur on the out-of-focus portions of each image is natural and of high quality. As the aperture is fixed, it's a great item for beginners who want experience with in-depth lens settings.

  • Carry a Beercan with your Sony A-mount camera

This hard to beat 70-210mm F4 zoom lens is solidly constructed, has the beautiful color quality that Minolta is known for and is very sharp. I'm enjoying it on my Sony a55 where it becomes equivalent to a 105-315mm zoom back in the day when I shot film in Minolta SLRs. When I move to a full frame a99 my lens kit will be ready with this and the 30-70mm F4 "Mini Beercan" which is also in my bag. Positives: * Sharp and responsive * Solid metal construction * A pleasure to use * Constant F4 aperture (Plenty of light with today's higher digital ISOs - no more ASA 400 Tri-X or grainy color slide film) * Less expensive than a new Sony lens Negatives: * Heavy and big (gotta get that midsize backpack bag from the closet and start using it again) * A little slower on the focus than the latest Sony SSM lenses - I would use manual focus if shooting sports * Front filter rotates with focus so using a polarizer is a challenge or impossible depending upon the situation On balance I love this lens and several of the other "ancient" AF Minolta lenses. Coupled with a "new" used Sony a99 from eBay I'm looking forward to combining the best of the old and the new.

  • Very could lens

This is my first telephoto lens for my Sony A58. I have enjoyed this lens. It take very sharp, clear, colorful pictures. It does weigh a bit. 24 oz, but it is tough. It would be very hard to break, like dropping it off a cliff. It is a very good lens, now one of my favorites. It don't come with a hood so I will have to buy one separately. But this is very good for the cost.

  • Superb working glass for Sony A Mount cameras

This is the "legendary beer can" (because of it's size and shape) and although f4 isn't as fast as some of today's best glass, this is a fantastic lens. Minolta owned their own glass factories as well as lens making facilities so they could control every aspect of the most critical element in making a quality image - the lens. The combination of Sony's amazing sensor and the best of the Minolta Maxxum AF lenses is a spectacular result, and this lens is one of the best.

  • A77 Gen 1 + Minolta Beercan

If you are on a budget, this is by the most bad @$$ 70-210 you can buy for the buck! I've used the Sony G's and the DT 55-200 (pure garbage). For a lens that's nearing three decades old its unbelievable. The pictures are sharp, there is SOME flare, but the lens hood takes good care of that and the glass is impeccable. It isn't the fastest lens, but is fast enough for me. I don't think sport shots, but I do photograph family events and children running, playing, holding their parents or hugging them...very cherish-able moments that need to be shot in a snap. It is a heavy lens, I don't recommend it for the faint of heart, but I do a lot of power lifting and stamina training; so this lens isn't bad at all. Overall, you can't beat a quality Japanese lens for under 80 bucks.

  • Great Lens

Lens arrived in great condition. No scuffs and very little sign of wear. There is some slight haze on one of the inner lens elements but it doesn't seem to affect the image quality.

  • I’d take it along not because it’s cheap, but it does get the jobs done

These 80’s Maxxum lens can be heavy, but they sure are crisp with decently fast glass even at wide open!

  • Konica Minolta 70-210mm F/4.0 AF Lens

Old glass works very well on the older Minolta and early Sony cameras and are excellent values because the lenses were very well made and are still very sharp and clear. This is an inexpensive option for getting into photography and I am very pleased with this lens.

  • Awesome Beercan

This lens is surprisingly well built. Light, but still metal. The image quality is great, but probably can't compete with a more expensive 80-200 f/2.8 lens -- at the current market price for this lens, I don't think the two levels of lenses can really be compared (this lens is probably 1/10 the price). Paired to an A7R with the LA-EA4 adapter and AF is snappy and images are completely usable.
