Chocolat' has a French title, a Swedish director, an American screenwriter, and is based on a novel by an English writer. Seemingly, this 2000 comedic/dramatic romance film is an international effort, a confluence of European and American influences coming together to create an enjoyable confection of a movie. Juliette Binoche stars as Vivian Rocher, who makes the audacious move of opening a chocolate shop during Lent in a traditionalist French town in 1959. The sprawling plot and large cast of characters includes Roux, played by Johnny Depp in one of his most memorable performances. This 'Chocolat' DVD release includes a feature-length commentary with the film's director and producers, as well as featurettes detailing the movie's production and the outstanding costume design that transformed stars Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp.

I enjoyed it very much
In some ways it was better than the book because it added some comedy and made the bad guy the mayor who was not in the book at all instead of a priest. I also bought the soundtrack since the music was so great.

One of Johnny's BEST characters!
I had borrowed the movie from the local library and was enthralled. Just had to have a copy of my very own. You gotta' LOVE Johnny Depp no matter the character he is portraying. What talent! But the gypsy in "Chocolat"....well now!
