  • One kit lens!

As a one lens kit this is ideal. The relatively wide f2.8 over the whole focal length of the zoom is fast enough in most dim light situations. The 1/4 macro facility at 35mm is a bonus. It is of metal construction and robust, though not too heavy to drag around for hours. Images are sharp and well rendered. Now my go to lens for general purpose.

  • Unjustly overlooked mid-range zoom

Many would-be serious photographers (such as one Ken Rockwell) are dismissive of mid-range zooms, saying they are strictly for wedding hacks and family snapshots. In fact, they are usually the most useful lens of all. I never leave home without one (but perhaps that just proves I'm not terribly serious). This 35-70mm f2.8 was Nikon's top pro mid-range zoom for years, until it was replaced by the more recent 28-70mm f2.8 - which has a slightly wider range, but also weighs a lot more, fills half your camera bag, costs a bomb, and does not have significantly superior optics. Since this lens was thus rendered "obsolete" it can be picked up very cheaply, especially considering not just the superb image quality - colour & sharpness are both excellent and bokeh is pretty good too - but also the extremely high standard of construction (NB it is small but NOT that light). True, 35mm does feel restrictive at times, but all in all this lens is impossible to beat at the price. Get one - you won't regret it.

  • Nikon 35-70 f2.8

Fantastic lens and great results on my D750. Not sure whether its better than the 24-70 but I am impressed by the results I get and for a fraction of the cost...plus its a lot lighter and very robustly built. Highly recommended if you can get one in great condition.

  • Old but not outdated

Nikon's 35-70mm f2.8D fixed aperture AF lens was a professional choice at one time. Its optical quality still matches its successors. If fast and silent autofocus are not your priorities then one of these lenses will not fail as some AF-S silent wave motors appear to have done when worked to death by professionals. The front element and hood rotate when focusing so using a polarising filter is impractical. The macro function is useful. A full-frame lens which will produce sharp images at reasonable cost and can be used with AF or manual.

  • 35-70mm 2.8f Nikkor

Excellent older version of the Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8f. Heavier weight shows just how solid the lens is made, packed with metal and glass. Would definitely recommend every Nikon lover to purchase one of these perfectly made 35-70mm 2.8f Nikkors. Well worth the money.

  • Ignore this lens at your peril.

Built like a tank and delivers stunning images. I also have the 24-70mm f2.8 and this lens matches it. I you can live without the 24-34mm range it is a no brainer. It's also far more compact and far more robust, being mainly metal and glass. As a result I find myself grabbing this most of the time with the Nikon 18-35mm G to cover wide angle stuff. Highly recommended.
