In the late 1960's the production of the silver coin began to plummet due to the rapid rise in the cost of silver. Mexico was one of the few countries that continued production of silver coins into the 1970's. In 1977, the first 100-peso coin was introduced. The Mexican coin was minted at the Mexico City Mint, and had a 0.720 fineness and 0.6428 oz of actual silver weight. The 1978 silver piece soon went out of production, as the cost of silver was becoming prohibitable. The obverse design of the Mexican coin features the Mexican Coat of Arms, an eagle perched on a cactus clutching a snake in his beak and one claw. On the outer periphery of the silver coin is the inscription "Estados Unidos Mexicanos". The reverse of the 1978 silver piece depicts a bust portrait of Jose Maria Morelos. On the left are the words "Cien Pesos", and on the right is the year the Mexican coin was issued and the mint mark Mo. Underneath the bust portrait is the inscription "Plata Pura", and "20 Gr.
