This DVD set covers the fourth and final instalment of the controversial and often violent BBC series. Five of the episodes feature the tragic story of Henry's fifth queen, Catherine Howard, who is masterfully portrayed by Tamsin Merchant - perhaps the best casting of her since it was played by Lynne Frederick in 1972. You cannot be unmoved by her 'final dance' whilst awaiting her inevitable death at Syon Abbey; nor the harrowing 4-minute scene of her execution(in which her confidant, Lady Rochford, is seen to be roughly manhandled by the assistant executioner before her own death, which is wrongly shown as her dying first). She is also seen bravely requesting the execution block so that she do a rehearsal before the main event! Rare are the scenes showing the executions of Dereham and Culpepper(very rarely seen in any Tudor film), and fairly accurate. Accuracy is often the problem with this series - sometimes silly, glaring mistakes that could have been avoided such as the scenes of Bishop Gardiner(played by former Upstairs Downstairs actor Simon Ward)interrogating her(it was, in fact, Archbishop Cranmer!)and Lady Rochford being despatched before her on the day of execution.. This is a pity, since Ms Merchant plays a believable role as the young Tudor queen. Despite the historical errors, this is a well-produced series with incredibly realistic scenes and backdrops, and certainly not a programme for the faint-hearted!!Read full review

Excellent DVD series. The Tudors is mostly accurate historically which makes it all the more fascinating. Obviously Jonathon Reys Meyers is far more glamourous that the original Henry the 8th as he retains his good looks until the end. It makes for great viewing the Anne Boelyn story being the longest and the most fascinating. Bloody and cruel as you would expect for the times, and full of political intrigue but the costumes are exceptional and worth watching for that alone. An excellent mix of great actors and actresses who put their all into this production. It shows what a dangerous time it was and how precarious life was for those at court.

The Tudors are probably one of the best story's ever told and the acting and costumes only add to this. It is a set I will watch time ans time again so good value for money.
