Over the Moon with this Blu Ray set. I'll give it an Alpha rating!
I LOVED Space 1999 when I was 15 back in 1975 and, 44 years later, I have fallen for it all over again thanks to this brilliant 7 disc Blu-Ray set of season one. Honestly, Moonbase Alpha has never looked so good and the episodes still really hang together in terms of not only entertainment value but also that strangely melancholic and metaphysical quality the show had in spades. That was season one, of course. I really couldn't be doing with season two when the IPC suits in New York brought in the dreaded Fred Freiberger, the man who took down 'Star Trek' in its final TV series, and the show turned into a cheap looking parade of stuntmen in costumes so silly they would have been banned from 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea'. So, let's look back at happier times when 'Space 1999' was set in the wonderfully big and expansive Main Mission set; when it co-starred the great Barry Morse as Victor Bergman, the heart of the show (ironic really, saying that the character had a mechanical one); when it also featured characters like Paul Morrow and David Kano; when it boggled the mind with giant space brains, black holes, 7 ft psychopaths wearing massive flares, at least 4 guest stars all wearing the same wig, and Brian Blessed giving a quiet, understated performance. And, of course, you had superstar leads like real-life husband and wife team Martin Landau and Barbara Bain who managed to have a 24 episode romance without once getting jiggy with it. This show was and is brilliant and I cannot recommend this great set enough
I highly recommend that any real fans of "Space:1999" try to find a low-cost, region free blu-ray player & this collection. I had this on blu-ray on its' American release & the two can't compare. There are more special features here, including pix I've never seen before plus, there are subtitles/closed-captioning which NONE of the US releases had, including the DVD releases. With the large number of international actors with thick accents that acted in this show, the sub-titles, although not 100% accurate, really help. Even the packaging is cooler!
Love it!!! ❤ "Still 100% Fabulous!!!" U know... as a kid this was one of my favourite TV series and if this was made at the time Star Wars was released I feel this show may have continued, Excellent picture and sound well worth it!!!... Highly recommend this amazing Blu ray collection to the true fans of Space : 1999! ✩✩✩✩✩
