Joseph Cable, a marine sent to the island with top-secret plans to spy on the nearby Japanese fleet, becomes friends with a local merchant, Bloody Mary, she brings him to the enchanted island of Bali Ha'i, where she introduces him to her daughter--an exotic beauty he soon becomes enamored with. The lovely tropical location is the perfect backdrop to showcase Rodgers & Hammerstein's mesmerising score, which includes the classic songs "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Ha'i," "There Is Nothin' Like a Dame," "Younger Than Springtime," "A Cock-eyed Optimist," and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair."

A Classic Hollywood Musical
This is arguably Rogers & Hammerstein's best Musical brought to the screen in sumptuous 70mm Technicolor. The two discs present the movie in both its normal released version and the extended "road show" presentation as well as with a host of extra footage filmed during the making of the film. The coloured filters used during some of the musical numbers may look a bit odd to contemporary viewers but that was a decision made by the film makers at the time and I feel, should be respected.
