'Clayhanger' - ATV series from 1970s
I originally watched the Clayhanger series when it was first broadcast in the 1970s and when my now grown up children were babies. I read the 3 Clayhanger books every few years as I find it a fascinating 'window' on a particular time and region and the collection of characters influenced by same. Apart from the fact that the cinematography and technology is naturally not as good as it has subsequently become, and the fact that, in my opinion, Janet Suzman is woefully miscast, the series has lasted well and Peter MacEnery and Harry Andrews in particular are very fine in their roles. I am very glad to be able, thanks to eBay, to once again see the Clayhanger stories brought to life on the screen. Allowance has to be made for the fact that these days scenes tend to be shorter and slicker and this is a product of its time - more theatrical, static and 'wordy' - if this is factored in then it should be a very enjoyable watch.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

A British Classic to Get Your Teeth Into!
In 1976, when this serialised drama was first broadcast in Britain on the ITV channel who had produced it, it was an instant hit with many, many viewers - including my wife and I. Comprising twenty-six, massive episodes, it dramatised the story of the book trilogy written by Arnold Bennett, which deals with the Clayhanger family - and in particular, the young Edwin Clayhanger - who live and work within "The Five Towns" of The Potteries in the late Victorian era. Edwin dreams of becoming an architect, but his overbearing father, Darius, won't entertain it, regarding it as a betrayal of his own, successful printing business which he had built up from scratch and always presumed Edwin would join it and eventually take over from him. Darius is played by the late, great Harry Andrews and I regard this as his finest career performance ever! Peter McEnery plays the adult Edwin, while his love interest, Hilda Lessways, is played by Janet Suzman. The pace may be a little slow by today's standards, but it works really well for me and you cannot helped but be gripped by the various characters' trials and traumas throughout. I might also add that when Edwin and Hilda first kiss, it is the LONGEST kiss I think I've ever seen in any drama - film or TV! This is CLASSIC British TV drama of the highest order and I urge anyone who can appreciate a good, serial drama to buy this and enjoy it at their leisure!Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
