Additional InformationA young girl inadvertently unleashes a race of ancient monsters while exploring her father's 19th century mansion in this horror remake written by Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins, and directed by newcomer Troy Nixey. Introverted Sally Hurst (Bailee Madison) has just moved in with her father, Alex (Guy Pearce), and his girlfriend, Kim (Katie Holmes), when she realizes that their sprawling estate holds its fair share of secrets. Descending into the depths of the house, Sally gains access to a secret lower level that has lain undisturbed for nearly a century, when the original builder vanished without a trace. When Sally accidentally opens the gateway that kept the creatures locked up tight, she realizes that in order to prevent them from destroying her family she must convince her sceptical father than monsters really exist.
ReviewsWashington Post - Feels retro in all the right ways; it's a bump-in-the-night tale that, if not for the occasional glimpse of a cellphone or reference to Adderall, could have been told decades ago., Empire Magazine - A satisfying, well-crafted supernatural horror movie, refreshingly retro in its Gothic trappings., Film 4 - DONT BE AFRAID OF THE DARK will remind viewers to tuck their feet in at night., Reelviews - The movie is deliciously creepy., Chicago Sun-Times - This is a very good haunted house film. It milks our frustration deliciously., Austin Chronicle - The fact that Troy Nixey's debut feature is one creepyass frightmare is what matters, and boy, does he put the nail in that metaphorical coffin the first time out., New York Post - Harks back to a 1960s idea of what a horror film should be., Birmingham Post - The irony, of course, is that you should be afraid of the dark. And you will be, after watching this scary horror film., The Globe and Mail (Toronto) - This is still a seriously entertaining horror movie, one that will please newcomers as well as fans of the original oddity.
