Additional InformationThe success of Mann's widescreen epic El Cid (1961) led to this even grander undertaking, one of Hollywood's periodic infatuations with the decadence of Imperial Rome. After murdering his father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius Commodus drifts into a life of wanton depravity as the Gothic hordes gather at the Empire's borders. A Hollywood spectacular in the grand tradition, but Mann manages to elicit some terrific performances amongst the mob scenes. According to the trailer, the film contains "Not just 3 or 4, but ALL of the known emotions!"

  • An experience of a Life Time !

This marvelous old film from the days of deference and pomp, with no cost spared - comes to the viewer in glorious saturated colours that make one want to climb through the screen and inhale the smell of filth and experience the heat of ancient Rome. View this experience on a big screen or preferably in the cinema. Enjoy!!!

  • Romans

I thought the film was fabulous. The story line was perfect. The sets were fantastic. The places they used were spot on. It made you feel you were back in their time. The actors and actresses were picked just right for the film. And didn't Christopher plummber , play a really good badly?. And the costumes ms Loren wore. They were gorgeous.

  • Gorgeous costumes and ensembles, boring movie

The movie style is very dated. It's a big production with gorgeous costumes, Kim Jong-Unesque grade mass performances and the actors are strong. But the dialogue is stale and verbose. There is an undercurrent of "we're tired of the cold war, let's make peace" which doesn't cut it anymore. The plot moves so slowly. The characters are two dimensional. High points: technicolour, impressive scenery and battle scenes Low point: so boring.

  • A very good film on dvd

A very good historical account for the fall of the Roman empire, might be slightly different to the real event, but a film I thoroughly enjoyed watching.
