  • Only a Gibson is good enough

The vintage headstock banner "Only a Gibson is good enough" doesn't make this beautiful instrument a classic, but the Bozeman, Montana craftsmanship certainly does: All solid woods and several historic details come together in a guitar that's easy to play, lightweight and a solid performer. Gibson issued the original J-35 even before the now legendary J-45. I personally love the J-45, but have not been able to find one that talks to me (I also don't have a huge budget). This one does! I am still experimenting with different string gauges, but my first impression is that this guitar is well made, plays nicely -and best of all: It has the uncanny tonal character of a Gibson acoustic. The built-in pickup is unobtrusive, but also lacks quality. Since I don't play Carnegie Hall often, for the time being this pickup stays in the guitar. Bottomline: if you can't find a good sounding J-45 in your price range, you really should play the J-35. It has beautiful Mahogany/Spruce tone, awesome playability, but no sunburst finish. A classic Gibson re-invented in the 21st Century.
