Additional InformationAward-winning actress Emily Watson (BREAKING THE WAVES) stars in this true story detailing a scandal that rocked Britain's childcare services. The directorial debut of Jim Loach, son of acclaimed filmmaker Ken Loach (KES) and written by Rona Munro (LADYBIRD, LADYBIRD), the film follows the trials and tribulations of Margret Humphreys (Watson), a Nottingham-based social worker who uncovered one of the biggest social scandals in Britain's recent history: the deportation to Australia of children living in care. Through dogged determination and against overwhelming odds, Margret pressed forward on an almost single-handed crusade which would see thousands of families reunited and the wrong-doers brought to justice. ORANGES AND SUNSHINE is an extraordinary film and a mesmerizing portrait of a remarkable woman.

  • Happiness and heartbreak.

The story was well worth the telling and reminding us how governments can deceive the population for generations. Thankfully the bravery of a lone social worker brought this story out into the open. A brilliantly acted film with all the emotions that you would expect from such a difficult subject.

  • An insight into an incredible event - beautifully portrayed,

This is an event that took place over four decades, originally organised by some well meaning people that went terribly wrong, and was condoned by people that we in the UK respected, but had we known what was going on in our name it could have been stopped. Now the Child Migrant Trust is working hard between the UK and Australia to bring together families torn apart in the 1940-70's . The acting of part of this true event is very moving, and I doubt if anyone viewing it will not feel angry and be wiping away tears - a very moving part of a true event.
