Long and in some places tedious. It’s a classic old Hollywood film with a big cast. But lacks soul and some sense of authenticity. They have French actors but it feels more like an American western than the Can-can! Cole Porter music isn’t always that great sung by the cast and it’s not the musics fault but the singer. Frank and Shirley deliver such a strong American feel they’re just not believable either as French or as in love. Even the end the good guy doesn’t get the girl because it’s Frank! His attire isn’t even in the period from suit to hat! So there are some great songs and Shirley looks beautiful but don’t expect it to be all about the Can-can which is only at the beginning and end. Close to the end of the film they do a Gene Kelly stage Performance which is great but totally out of sink with Victorian France! And all the scenery is so broadway set it looks like the cardboard sets from a Morecambe and Wise sketch! I know it has a lot wrong with it but you can’t help watching it anyway.
Can Can has a miscast Shirley Maclaine and a few Cole Porter songs sung in the usual Frank Sinatra way.
Get the impression they were hoping for another Gigi by including Louis Jourdan and Maurice Chevalier. It didn't work.
The story is boring. The songs lack lustre. The production is very studio bound. The dancing is good though.
Not enough to make a good film.
