About this product

Product Information

The Yashica MG-1 is a classic rangefinder camera, in the 35 millimeter film format, a style made famous by renowned optics manufacturer Leica. Introduced in 1975, it descends from the legendary Electro 35 line of rangefinder cameras manufactured by Yashica, once a staple of Japan's vibrant photography industry alongside names such as Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and Ricoh. Like the Electro cameras that came before it, the Yashica MG-1 features an aperture priority automatic exposure system, an automatic leaf-type shutter, and a crisp coupled Yashinon 45 mm lens. The MG-1 is a camera that can be appreciated by a diversity of analog photography enthusiasts. The camera uses a PX32 mercury battery or compatible alkaline substitute, loaded through a screw-capped battery well on the bottom plate of the camera. The battery operates both the automatic exposure system as well as the electronic shutter. Pulling up the film winder, on the left side of the top plate, releases the back panel, allowing 35 millimeter film to be loaded. Film speed is set via a lever on the bottom side of the lens, from 25 up to 800 ASA. Once the film is advanced, the Yashica MG-1 is ready to take beautiful photos in a variety of situations. The bright viewfinder allows photographs to be framed and focused more easily than SLR-style cameras. Focal length is set using the manual focus ring on the barrel of the lens, with a range from 1 meter to infinity. A small ghost image in the center of the frame will line up with the rest of the image to assist this operation. The aperture is also set manually using an adjustment ring in front of the focus ring with a range from f/2.8 to f/16. New photographers can use the convenient pictographs indicating ideal settings whether their shooting conditions are sunny, cloudy, or indoors. Partially depressing the shutter release on the MG-1 activates the CdS exposure system and automatically sets the shutter speed within a range from 1/500 to 2 seconds. LED lamps will illuminate both on the top plate of the camera and in the viewfinder to indicate if the settings are beyond the range of the camera's set capability. The yellow lamp indicates a tripod should be used, possibly with a cable shutter release or the integrated seven-second timer, to reduce image blur on longer exposures. The red lamp indicates overexposure, which can be rectified by stopping down the lens. Fully depressing the release will snap the photo.A flash can be utilized to extend the low light capability of the Yashica MG-1 for effective indoor use. A switch on the top plate of the camera locks the shutter speed to 1/30 of a second while a hot shoe allows easy attachment of a manual external flash unit.Like its predecessors in the Yashica Electro 35 GS and GSN lines, the MG-1 is a solidly built camera. The full-sized aluminum-bodied camera weighs approximately 1.4 pounds and was produced in a satin chrome or black finish. Pebble-textured black plastic wraps around the grip surface, providing both a classic look as well as a firm hold in the user's hand.

  • Great rangefinder film camera experience !

Really enjoy shooting film again with this nice rangefinder! Film is readily available in color and black and white in slide and print and the photo labs are now processing and scanning for as little as $11.00-I am currently using the services of "The Darkroom"in San Clemente ,Calif with great results! Batteries for this camera are also readily available form numerous online sources that replace the old mercury batteries' Hope this helps others who are considering doing some film AGAIN or for the FIRST time-either way a great experience lies ahead! i am now considering a Yashica Electro 35 for my next film reangefinder camera!
