Preposterous premise but charming, nonetheless. Sentimental portrayal of a rural Welsh village contriving for the tallest mountain in Wales. Abetted, unwittingly or otherwise, by a coupe of English land surveyors, a case of good surveyor, bad surveyor. Hugh Grant, type-casts as himself, is the good surveyor who "went up a hill", is charmed not only by idyllic Wales but, also by one of it's more attractive inhabitants played by Tara Fitzgerald. As the senior surveyor, Ian McNeice does a good turn as a clichéd bombast of an Englishman. Memorably, Colm Meaney, as the scheming pub-landlord, steals the scenes. While Kenneth Griffith, as the hyper-ventilating Reverend Jones, merely irritates.

I loved this film, Hugh Grant and colleague arriving to measure the first mountain in Wales -which they downgrade to a hill. Village is not amused. It's a simple little tale, but the characters carry it through and the names - taking the mick a bit with the Welsh habit of tagging professions after names, i.e. Tommy Two Stroke who rides a motorbike; Jones the goat who - well - lets put it this way, he's a redhead, the men are away fighting on the Western Front and all the newborn babies have red hair. In the case of this Englishman, he went up a mountain and disappeared! My dvd, bought as a Christmas present for a friend, never arrived at my berth in Portugal. Fortunately the supplier was very undertanding and reimbursed me because he didn't have any left of that particular title. Now all I want is another copy at the right price.Read full review
A lovely and very well observed gentle comedy.

Amazing film that has humour and great film location. Not completely true for mountain measurements but for the layman it's okay. I would recommend to anyone.
