  • 9kw PTC heater. It works

Everything has it's limits. I took a plump on this as a PTC heater should never get too hot and seeing small single phase ones I was amazed at how small they were. This is obviously a different animal. Compared to a 15kw element heater it moves a lot more air, so the fan makes more noise. It is comparable to the dehumidifier I have in the same space but you can comfortably talk next to it. Perhaps not suitable for quiet telly viewing though. The fan runs all the time and has a run on to cool the unit when the switch is set to off. At full heat you can hold hands just off the grille and it is hot but not burning. Circulated hot air is immediately noticeable up to 8 ft away (2.4 meters) after that you need to wait for the space to warm. After 2.5 hours it had not lifted enough to trip the thermostat at mid setting. This is in a double garage. 7 meters X 4. Pitched slate roof and some insulation poorly fitted. (I will be sorting this directly now) about 2 degrees C outside. Detached building. I was warm in there. Think tee shirt but not shorts. The heater does not need a neutral despite coming with a quality 5 pin (16 amp) plug. It's well made but not built like a tank. It is a light heater. No stainless as it runs cool. The case is touch cool when operating. Heat is not projected much to the sides at the front, so 2 meter clearance is not needed. The equipment beside the heater (1 ft away) either side was room temperature. So it heats the air blown through and is not an IR heater. It uses force convection. Looking at the design it uses 2 phases for heating on low setting. Marked as 6kw. This equates to 14.5 amps on those 2 phases. Full heat uses all 3 phases and the current drops as a result to an estimated 12.5 amps. I intend to meter this as soon as I have a battery for the clamp meter. I have it fed via 1.5mm 3 core swa (fused to 15 amps) and there was a noticeable temperature rise on the (short) cable run. But not hot. Only warm, so this would stack up. There is little adjustment of the angle up or down. Tabs are fitted to limit movement. This will be a safety thing. Fine on clean concrete floors but there to prevent sucking crap into the elements or setting fire to the floor. It still outputs 9kw of energy. The flex is h07 rubber 2.5, 4 core and just over 1 meter long. So you probably need an extension or a suitable table at your socket. As a note, it stirs the air rather than blows it, despite the fan noise. You don't get heat from miles away like big fuel heaters either. The switches are nice and work fine. There is a relay inside that does the leg work. Overall. For the money it is made well enough and thought through. Can run on a 4 pin plug. Heats the space fine. Makes more noise than the older element heaters. Runs much cooler. Keep it away from harm and run at full power and it should last a good while without stress on a single point. Can it be converted to run 220/230 volts? No Does it need all 3 phases? Yes. How many amps per phase? 15.
