Set against the background of the French Revolution and based on Victor Hugo's classic novel this is the story of Jean Valjean who is sent to prison for stealing a loaf of bread and is released after nineteen years. He meets and cares for a beautiful but poverty-stricken young girl named Fantine who has daughter Cosette. John Owen-Jones brings great heart, passion and a tremendous voice to the tormented Jean Valjean, who escapes from the chain-gang only to be hunted down by the remorseless policeman Javert, given a memorably sinister, doom-laden performance by Earl Carpenter. The latterÆs final exit is perhaps the most spectacular in modern theatre., DVD Verdict - Veteran stage actors Alfie Boe and Norm Lewis do a magnificent with the roles of Valjean and Javert respectively, as does Ramin Karimloo as the rebellious Enjolras.
