The Guns of Navarone is one of the great epic World War II films of all time. A painstaking 4k digital restoration by Sony has resulted in an exceptional Blu-ray disc which is being issued in conjunction with the film's 50th anniversary. I had the "DVD 2007" restored version. I was happy with it, I have watched "The Guns of Navarone" three times this year. I was happy with the DVD release, until I watched the Blu Ray version. THE BLU RAY - The picture seems dark in the first part of the film, the Lancaster bomber crashing into the airfield annoys me as the hovering Lancaster is still in the film! Its the Lancaster coming into land above the crashing Lancaster, its hanging in mid air, why wasn't it deleted? it looks wrong. The clouds above the Lancaster are very sharp, and look like clouds from "Toy Story". The picture is sharper, colours are strong, and the sound....... the sound is amazing, it's the best ever (DTS-HD MA 5.1). Once the film starts you quickly stop picking and stop looking for faults. If you watch both film versions together (DVD vs BlU RAY, set up two pc monitors or TVs), you realise how much better the blu ray picture is. Its grainy in parts, but this is the best we are going to get as the original Technicolor Prints are lost for ever. The guys at Sony have done a great job using the reprints. In the naturally-lit outdoor work, it's much better, and the colour saturations are especially pleasing. Efforts to put back the original four-track stereo have been well worth it, and its conversion to DTS-HD MA 5.1 is largely successful. And it plays well with a THX Surround Receiver. For most of the film the 2.35:1 1080p image is excellent, and at times it is even breathtaking.
