Fascinating insight into a century ago
This book is written by Stefan Zweig, born in Austria well before the First World War, and someone who seemed to seek out and develop contacts with lots of people who were important in their field in the period leading up to, and through, WW1, and then through to the start of WW2. Almost all were artists, authors, sculptures, politicians, playwrights or musicians - but the name-dropping doesn't really jar too much because the writing, and the translation, is so good. Many comments Zweig made could still be made in the contact of today and, of course, we also have the benefit of hindsight, whereas he is simply observing what occurred at the time. This book really does take you back into those times, and gives you a flavour of the lives of real people, albeit mainly the 'intellectuals', who Zweig met.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

A superb autobiography set in momentous times
A very personal view of the European world over a period of cataclysmic change and collapse by an extremely intelligent, perceptive and artistically talented man with wide connections. The narration is beautifully constructed using elegant prose that has been excellently translated. Zweig himself would have approved!
