This machine was (I previously owned a new one) always temperamental, due to the inherent design of DAT machines having many moving parts, The design is the same as VCR machines, as far as the tape mechanism goes. This is its Achilles's Heal. Electronically these are very dependable. Many problems can be traced to the tape's condition. I have found that taking the cover off of the unit allows you to view whether the tape is properly loaded and it's spindles are not binding up. You can then see if the tape is about to be eaten and be able to take evasive action. (press stop) In summary: Though this machine is fabulous in sound quality, it can be problematic. With so many more options available for audio recording now, I wouldn't recommend a DAT machine, unless you have tapes you wish to archive. Read full review

The Dat player arrived and would not function, it is at the repair shop right now. These units need to be played or the parts will freeze and deteriorate. This my second one and I’m sure I will not be disappointed, eventually.
