Did not deter the Rooks until our further design amendment. Now seems to keep them away!
I have given 3 stars only because we purchased this to stop the Rooks stealing all the little birds food and as the feeder was really designed to deter squirrels we are unable to comment about this as they are not our problem. As it stands it will not deter persistent determined Rooks with their long beaks, they carried on scoffing the lot! But with another layer of 2" welded mesh added around the base it has stuffed them!!!! Seems they have now gone elsewhere hopefully for easier pickings as none seen on bird feeder over the last 2 days!!! That's not to say that the crafty big buggers are not sitting in a tree somewhere close trying to fathom out how to get around the new fortifications!!!Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Unsuitable for soft Suet balls
The cage does stop the magpies and squirrels getting to the fat balls. However the balls I use are "Peckish Extra Goodness" which are fragile and break-up and fall through the hoops on the inner cage! I needs a mesh, like for peanuts not hoops! I have had to install a mesh inside to stop this happening. The long-tailed tits are enjoying it now very much. I have also installed rain guards as well as the mesh.

Unfortunately - not Squirrel proof
We purchased this fat ball feeder as we are plagued by squirrels after the bird food. Sadly, the gap between the outer bars is too wide. Our squirrels can squeeze their heads in far enough to get at the fat balls. Not what we were expecting - disappointing!Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Doesn't Beat Starlings!
I bought this in the hope that it would prevent starlings from raiding the fat balls that are out for the smaller birds. Unfortunately, it doesn't. I know it says "squirrel" in the title - and I am certain it would stop those creatures - but I had taken the gamble that it might work on medium sized birds too. Probably only a protection against squirrels
I wanted a starling proof bird feeder so that the little birds could feed without being mobbed and was directed to this design. it does not work against larger birds like starlings because they can still reach through the wires and get to the fat balls. There is another feeder which appears to have a wider cage round the feeder but whether that would work I do not know.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Does what it's advertised to do.
