  • The Original Standard for Electric Pumps

If you have a British Classic Car from the 1930s to the 1980s it would be a good bet that it was built with an SU electric fuel pump or would benefit with having one fitted. In the case of Jaguars they had two of them, one for each tank and at the flick of a switch on the dash you could change between tanks and pumps without the big six missing a beat. This model is the original mechanical contact breaker type which gives the true SU rumble that lets you know it is working when you switch on. The later electronic models although externally identical don't give the same feel and ultimately the points type are user rebuildable. Excellent quality and design make the SU good value but there are cheaper alternatives available now. If any of them will have the SU's longevity is another matter. One issue that the unwarey can encounter when buying used SU pumps is that there are two types High Pressure which are fitted near to the fuel tank and Low Pressure that should live under the bonnet. As the only way to distinguish between them is by model number knowledge or good research is needed. But to be fair a new example from a trusted supplier will not break the bank and their expertise will find the right pump for the job.
