Surprisingly Awesome
I'm a songwriter and I had one specific song in mind for this, but the effect is so natural and convincing that it's opening a lot of ideas for my other songs. It's an amazingly beautiful sound, fortified with a tone button that sweetens your voice to a pro level, even if you're an average singer. I use a Sennheiser e835 microphone and it sounds like I spent thousands when I sing through my powered speaker, even when not using the harmony effect. The reverb is really great, and the gain knob very appreciated to balance my vocal microphone (e835) with my guitar cab miked with a Shure SM57. At first, I had a high, non-standard tuning on my one guitar, and it didn't work well. I read the documentation and it mentioned that most any tuning will work as long as it's A440. In other words, use a tuner before you start for best results: this guitar was tuned by ear. As soon as I tried my other guitar, tuned with a chromatic tuner, to E flat, I was blown away by how awesome this pedal is. A person may not need harmonies on every song they do, but on the ones they do, this brings something magical that stands out in a big way. Normal
As with any harmonizer, some specific knowledge of what you want it to do and how to do that is required. Its easy to setup and the harmonies sound good, if the right harmonies come out. 50/50 whether you hear what you expect or some derivative of the chord but not matching the key you are playing. Lots of fun in a small package.
I don't know that I would use this pedal in a public performance, but it's fun to play with. Grab your old acoustic/electric, plug that sucker in, along with a good mic (SM58 works well) and whenever you play a chord, this pedal will produce some cool harmonies that follow the guitar chords. Lots of options for a third or fifth above or below the melody, and it even has some basic EQ and Reverb you can use on your voice as well. NOTE: this unit produces 48VDC phantom power for condenser mics. If you use a dynamic mic, that 48VDC is still there and applied to the wires going into your mic. TC Helicon says it won't hurt your mic, but that may not be the case. Some ribbon mics and other types may be destroyed by having 48 VDC applied to them. I hope that TC Helicon will change the design and include a simple on/off for the phantom power. Until then, I'd suggest that you invest in a phantom power blocker if you're going to use this with a dynamic mic. Everybody sing!
As a song leader and arranger for a small church, that doies not have a large enough congregation to have back up vocalists, this device is amazing! It takes the voice of mine, which is a tenor and by adding lower singers makes it sound as if a whole group is singing! Tried it in the Church this evening and I believe that when I step on the button the first time tomorrow morning during service people are going to wake up when a group of better singers than I join in! If you sing for any reason, get this! You will not be dissappointed in the spatial results and unbelievable human harmonies! Almost to good to be mechanical voices! Great pedal for the vocal guitarist!
I purchased this product because I wanted something that was easy to use and also harmonized based upon the chords I play during the song. I have had other pedals with decent results and more bells & whistles, but at the end of the day, this is what I really needed!! Easy to set up, harmonizes excellently, and it fits neatly into a normal sized slot on my pedal board! Simple, Solid, and Beautiful
The Harmony Singer does exactly what it's supposed to do: produces quality harmony vocals in real time in a sturdy, simple pedal. It's easy to use out of the box (only thing that took some time was getting the mic gain set properly). The knobs are self explanatory. The Tone button adds some nice, subtle effects. Almost Perfect
This might just be a little early, as I am still dialing it in. I actually used it onstage to good effect with little practice, and had to explain to a couple of people on breaks where the other voices were coming from. My reservations are due to the fact that it seems that I can overload the mic more easily than before, and the tone settings have changed fairly drastically. I had to cut the treble 3 numbers, and increase the bass by 2. I have put a foam screen on the mic so I don't get into it and overload the signal. One other thing. I have an AKG 1000 through a Fishman 220 tower. I was not clear on the phantom power always being on in the Harmonizer, and left the phantom power on in the amp. I'm hoping I didn't damage the mic and causing the tone and overload problems. The instructions could be clearer on this subject. All in all, the pedal is fast and immediately intuitive. It's fun to hold a note while changing chords, and listen to the harmonies shift accordingly. Singing in falsetto puts the third above into the stratosphere. Pretty darn cool. Do check out the Play Acoustic before purchasing this device. For not much more money you can get a whole raft of effects for voice and guitar, as well as a looper. Good but could be better.
Has nothing to do with seller. Seller gets 5stars all around. TC Helicon tried to make a smaller version of a product that they have available at a much higher price so high that most will probably not be interested. The product has the right intention with a couple of real useful features but the stability seems to wander. Just make sure you are tuned as is the case with most of these harmony guitar guided pedals. My experience. I have three, 2 digitech, voicelive harmony 2&3 guitar guided. Easy to use, easy to like.
I have extensive experience with TC Helicon harmony gear (Voicelive 2, now a Voicelive 3 Extreme, a Mic Mechanic, and recently a Singles H1 which I sold to get this Harmony Singer 2. The Voicelive 3X totally does the trick for me...but recently my wife has joined me in my musical endeavors. A neophyte, her singing needs all the help it can get so I built a small pedalboard for her...Mic Mechanic for tone conditioning and pitch correction and then into the H1. That sounded great, but I quickly figured out that the H1 only has a latching switch for harmony on/off. When you want to punch in just a short phrase of harmony the double pedal press and having to look down (and come off the mic) was a loser, and for me enough to justify a switch to the HS12. The Harmony Singer 2 has a momentary option on the harmony switch. Works great. Same great TC harmonies. My wife guides the unit with her ukulele so no messing with key settings between songs (H1 had that option for non musicians, Harmony Singer 2 does not). The HS 2 also has the tone conditioning circuitry that the Mic Mechanic has, so that is redundant for me...but good to have. Works well
I have only had the box for a short time but, this box does just what it is supposed to do. The only thing I will add is that if you have the level of harmony up too far when using the higher pitched harmonies....it will start to sound like a chipmunk. LOL. But, all the other voices sound great and the box will pick up your guitar chord pretty good. I would recommend it to any vocalist.
