Small but beautifully formed
Not the same sound as larger near-fields (Mackies, Alesis, etc.) and no extended bass, but an amazing level of detail in reverb tails, room ambience, etc. I find that they sound best positioned at ear height. Imaging is fine, but is a matter for your room and placement as much as it is of the speakers. Pros: come with everything (cables, isolation pads, etc.); front panel switch/volume, phones out (mutes speakers) and aux in (mixes rear in); choice of rear panel inputs; you can choose your own D/A convertor (unlike speakers with USB connectors); attractive design and solid build. Not bad, heard better
Good sounding compact studio monitors. If you manage to get hold a working pair then they are quite good. There are better sounding speakers out there but these are not terrible. I always use an EQ instead of sending a flat signal so there are always some enhancements. There are significant design issues. Zener Diodes on the PCB burn out due to immense heat generated. They are easily replaceable but would you really want to? Additionally, the rear switch for deciding which speaker is Left/Right is cheap and can become faulty. This will affect the output sound. Again, not a difficult fix for the competent electronics hobbyist. I am not sure but I think the newer X series have those two issues resolved which makes them a better purchase than the old CR4 version. That said, a second hand pair of CR4 that have been properly repaired should last a long time with zero faults, which makes them worth every penny (at used price)Verified purchase: Yes

For small rooms
These monitors are brilliant. They are accurate and once set up properly have a great stereo image. The amp on the back gets a little hot but it has a big heatsink so nothing to worry about. There's a switch to choose which side you want the volume control on (also the side with all the inputs and power).
