  • Dell 2007FP - Great Monitor

The 20" Dell 2007FP is a really good monitor in my experience. I've used them for years, have five of them in my (music) studio at the moment. Why are they so good? Well for a start, they are 4:3 aspect ratio. This is getting harder to find these days, but in my experience it's ideal for a multi-monitor setup. They 2007FP's are a good, handy size for tool palates etc - compact bezels, don't take up a lot of desk space - but also large enough to use solo for internet browsing etc. You can even rotate them on their stands and use them as 3:4 format - put four in a row, knock yrself out! Also, they are solid and reliable. I buy them second-hand, and have found it pretty rare to get stuck pixels - although the casing-backs mark up pretty easily, so I do buy from ads with clear pictures, cos I like my creative space to look cool. I know some people complain that Dell cut some corners with their components & electronic design - but when you've got five ten-year old monitors in your studio you know they must be doing something right design-wise. Some of their other models seem to suffer button failure, but I've never had any issues with that on the 2007FPb. Thirdly, considering their reliability, they represent very good value second-hand - as you can pick up a good example for around £30-£40 if you're lucky. Things to watch when buying. The stands and casing backs are always silvery coloured. The 'b' at the end of FPb means black, as in the bezel/screen-surround. The other ones have silver screen-surround to match the casing. If the ad just says 200FP, chances are it's black - the significant majority seem to be - but check with the seller if you're unsure. Another variant to watch for. The standard 2007FP is a 4:3 aspect ratio - 1600x1200 pixels. There is also a 2007WFP - the 'W' is for widescreen - 1680x1050 pixels, so an 8:5 aspect ratio. I have had trouble in the past being sent one of these by another seller - ad marked as 1600x1200 but actually widescreen. So again, if there's any contradiction between (1) the stated pixel-dimensions (2) the photograph and (3) the 'W' or absence-of in the name, then doublecheck with the seller. Remember, these screens and stands are solid & have weight, so return postage for them is non-trivial. Cool. Happy buying.
