The Film Pool
I will be presumptuous that anyone looking at this particular Blu-ray collection is already aware there is one (at least in Region A) without the final Dirty Harry film, The Dead Pool, more readily available as of this date and at less cost per film. Best I can tell, it contains the same special features, so it really comes down to desire for that final film due to a compulsive need for a complete collection (part of my motivation) and/or opinion of The Dead Pool itself. Admittedly, it is not quite as enjoyable as the others, but it is also underrated. If you enjoy the work of Liam Neeson or Jim Carrey, these “before they were stars” roles are worth a watch. Though, if you are familiar with the comedy stylings of Jim Carrey, it is a bit more difficult to take him seriously, particularly during the video shoot to “Welcome to the Jungle.” Overall, the plot to The Dead Pool works well; it just had less of a message than the other four films. More generally speaking, Harry Callahan, along with Clint Eastwood’s portrayal, is a character that has influenced multiple movies and TV in the inclusion of the archetype of a cop that bends the rules to the greater intent of the law rather than the exact letter; duplicated but never better. I found the picture and sound to be great for films of this age, though The Dead Pool appears not to have gone through the same remastering process. I personally did not have buyer’s remorse at all.
