The truth revealed On the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, this BBC 3-part history documentary presents the cataclysmic events that began on 1st July 1916 from, for the first time, both sides of No Man's Land. With access to little known German military archives, Peter Barton investigates documents which reveal a very different history, one that contradicts many of the myths and untruths which have grown up around the battle. Why, given German forces were sometimes outnumbered five to one by the British and their French ally, was this bloodiest military encounter hailed at the time and since - as a British victory? He argues that something like the opposite of this viewpoint is closer to the truth.

  • What would you expect?

What would you expect ? This 180 minutes (2 hour) long documentary which is written & presented by the well known historian / author Peter Barton. He has thoroughly researched the factual details from both German and British war / regimental archives. On a slightly negative point I found that I could not watch it all in one viewing, but have taken three sessions because there is so much detail and information given as the presenter takes you around the various locations on the battlefield. Well worth the money for anyone who is at least interested in the Great War, especially the battle of the Somme.
