Additional InformationA papermaker living during the later days of the Qing Dynasty finds his village under threat following an intense investigation. Liu (Donnie Yen) is a family man from a small secluded village. He lives a quiet life with his wife Ayu (Tang Wei) and their two young children. But Liu's simple existence begins to unravel following the arrival of Detective Xu (Takeshi Kaneshiro). Dispatched to gather details about a botched robbery in which two bandits were killed, Detective Xu quickly discovers that Liu has been harboring some troubling secrets about his background. Later, as the ghosts of Liu's past begin to manifest, a dark cloud is cast over the entire village.
Donny Yen shows his acting and martial arts credentials in a story which could have easily been a western if six shooters had been used. It is nonetheless engaging, atmospheric and has high production values.I highly recommend it.
The storyline is riverting with lots of martial arts sequences that are simply awesome. The delicate love that blossoms in this film is touching. The engaging conflicts of ancestral family teachings, versus the right to choose ones own path and priciples when grown up. This is a truely interesting film that delves into depth where the human mind can pocess almost supernatural power and forward thinking.
