ERIK SATIE was the unwitting master of the downcast and crestfallen, the eccentric French pianist and composer, with 17 identical grey corduroy suits, who spent much of his adult life living in a tiny, garret room, surrounded by his own blackened turds wrapped in newspaper, collection of walking sticks and umbrellas, and two pianos end to end, one stuffed with papers and notes, composition and rubbish. How could Satie compose such beautifully haunting and melodic work in this squalor and filth? This is a a tremendously rich and exuberant recording that transports the listener to imaginative spaces filled with vistas of 19th century Paris in the rain, Impressionist paintings melting before your eyes, and the fin-de-siecle cutting edge of culture. Well worth buying.
