A Underrated Integrated amplifier
The Denon PMA-500AE was released in 2007 in Europe, this was never released in the North American market. This amplifier received negative and mixed reviews from the British press. The user reviews from European forums tell a different story, surprisingly they were mostly positive. The Denon PMA-500AE sold very well Europe and was a entry level amplifier that offered the build quality, design and features shared with Denon's higher end amplifiers. It sold 199 pounds in the UK in 2007 which converts to roughly 399 US dollars in 2007. When adjusted for inflation in 2020, it equates to roughly 500 US dollars in todays money when it was new. So this amplifier was not cheap when it was new.
Regarding sound quality of the amplifier is warm and dynamic, but struggles to provide separation of the instruments with the stage it sets at times. The bass isn't strong with this amplifier but is subtle and concise. So if you are bass head, then you are going to find the amplifier's sound to be too dry. Despite the Denon PMA-500AE's drawbacks with its sound it is very well equipped. The amplifier includes a Phono, CD, Aux, and 2 Tape inputs. It supports 4 Ohm speakers at 70 Watts per channel, and 8 Ohm speakers at 45 or 50 Watts per channel. It does work with North American and Japanese stereo components even though this a European amplifier that designed to handle components operating at 50hz instead of 60hz The Denon PMA-500AE shares a similar modern design with its modern 2020 equivalent the Denon PMA-600NE. The PMA 500AE can be found on UK and other European Online shops from 100 US dollars to 150 US dollars before shipping. The PMA-500AE still provides a great price to performance ratio even today if you can find and import one at a reasonable cost. I would recommend the PMA-500AE to select audiophiles and any Hifi enthusiast who is looking for a affordable integrated amplifier.
