About this product

Product Information

Built from 1951 to 2000, BMC's A-Series engine was a remarkably successful, versatile and invaluable power unit that far outlived its original projected life. Not only did it power road cars as varied as the Austin A30, the Mini and the MG Midget, but it also found use in world-class race and rally cars, record-breaking special machines, light commercial vehicles and even tractors. This fascinating illustrated book chronicles the full history and achievements of this remarkable engine, nearly 15 million of which were made.

  • Comprehensive history of the applications of the BMC A series engine

A comprehensive account of the BMC A series engine with a high level of information on the various manufacturing locations and applications such as motorsport. The level of technical detail of its development and was not so good, but I am not surprised that some of the development detail is missing. I worked at BL on vehicle applications (mainly Mini and Metro) of the A series engine in the mid-to late1970s, in particular cooling systems, and found that there were no comprehensive records of previous work. Clearly a lot of work had been done as I kept on finding designs or actual components that had been developed in the past for some application (for instance a drawing of a mixed-flow water pump probably used in the 1960's racing engines), but there was no record of why the designs were the way they were and what problem was addressed. The reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is that the content tended to wander about and repeat various aspects. In addition, I would have liked to see a comprehensive table of all the variants by capacity/bore/stroke/ key features and design/ manufacturing location etc. Overall, though, a fantastic book and a great memorial for Graham Robson who died in August 2021.
