About this product

Product Information

As a founder member of the world's most successful instrumental group, the Shadows, and a chart-topper in his own right, bassist Jet Harris scaled the heights of superstardom in the 1960s. A helpless alcoholic for most of his adult life, he also sank to unimaginable depths of despair, leaving a string of broken hearts and shattered lives in his wake. In this unauthorised biography author Dave Nicolson examines his eventful life and career, and how he eventually overcame his addiction to the bottle and fought his way back to centre stage. In the second part of the book, a series of revealing interviews with those friends and artists who knew him best -- Cliff Richard, Bruce Welch, Tony Meehan, Brian 'Licorice' Locking, Billie Davis and others -- completes this unique and intimate portrait of a music legend.

It's not easy writing a book on Jet Harris (my hero) but this is a good attempt.

  • Jet Harris in spite of everything

Jet Harris was one of the early electric bass guitar players that really stood out, not only for his striking appearance but for his playing style. His early work with the Shadows which he came up with the name for, is legendary and captured on many recordings which still sound fresh today. We were also distantly related cousins but never met, related through a music hall star. The book gives an insight into the days with the Shadows and after with interviews from the people who knew Jet. The Shadows was the leading UK musical act with Cliff Richard from 1959 to 1964, the pressures must have been enormous and although the rewards were good, there were personal sacrifices too. Jet unfortunately liked a drink or two and inevitably this led to his decline along with a couple of unfortunate car accidents which put him out of action for a while, robbing him of professional momentum. The book covers his work with Tony Meehan post Shadows which was quite successful. Jet had a fairly troubled life for a while, but managed to get himself back on track and appeared at the Shadowmania 99 event run by Bruce Welch of the Shadows. Jet managed to maintain his playing and recorded with a number of artists. Jet was an artistic bass player, even from the very early days and no doubt many bass players that followed took something from his style in developing their own playing. This book is a great piece of our early post war music history that people should be aware of!
