A unique social history about the Helme/Helm/Helmn family which spans 700 years in Lancashire. Helmes became unofficial squires owning two large houses in Goosnargh. One Helme was offered a knighthood and was fined by Charles 1st for refusing it and another was put in the Debtors wing at Lancaster Castle. Helmes were also clergy, Fr Germanous Helme being arrested and allegedly poisoned in the dungeon at Lancaster Castle and Nicholas who was summoned by the Bishop of Chester to answer serious charges; T. Helmn was committed to Lancaster County Lunatic Asylum, escaped, later to be returned.
