About this product

Product Information

The Koni-Omega Rapid 100 Rangefinder film camera is a medium format class of rangefinder cameras. These are press cameras that feature combined rangefinders and viewfinders with automatic parallax compensation. The Koni-Omega Rapid 100 Rangefinder is a 6 by 7 film camera, and all the Koni cameras use a medium format mid-roll film. The first Koni camera, in what would come to be known as the Koni-Omega system, was released in 1954. The "Rapid" in the Omega’s name comes from the rapid bolt like action of the shutter and winder which sits on the bottom right of the camera. The Rapid Omega ended its production in 1981. Even though the Koni cameras had American origins, they were produced in Japan during most of their production run. Originally the Koni was built by the Simmons Brothers, who are known for their enlargers line. The Rapid 100 is a result of the success of the original Omega 120 camera design was by Alfred Simmon and was introduced in March 1954. Later it became known as the Koni-Omega made by Konica. There are 10 exposures of 6 by 7 to a roll of 120 film, and 20 to a 220 film roll. The 220 film backs, however, are less common than those with 120 backs. To advance the film there is a push-pull operation feature on a handle attached to the side of cameras. This handy feature makes it possible to advance the film very rapidly. The Koni-Omega Rapid 100 Rangefinder film camera has a lens that is focused above the film advance by a large knob. The entire lens mount is moved in and out by a rack-and-pinion system. The image in the viewfinder and rangefinder is determined by the focus, as well as pins, one or more, protruding by the rear of the lens. The other side of the camera, close to the shutter release, features a large grip that makes it easy and comfortable to hold on to the camera. This grip also helps to keep it steady while taking pictures. This camera does not have a light meter included. The Koni requires dark slides to change lenses and film backs. There is an interlock system that stops the shutter from being operated while a dark slide is in place. There is always the possibility of a double exposure with all cameras, but with these cameras the rate of accidental double exposure is rare. The normal lens for this camera is 90mm f/3.5 Tessar, and the shutter speeds range from 1 to 1/500 a second, while the minimum aperture is f/32. There are also 58mm and 60mm wide-angle lenses featuring f/8 and f/6 Super Angulons. In order to frame you need to have an accessory finder. The 180mm lens at f/4.5, is closely equivalent to a 35mm camera at 100mm. This is good for portraits since it is able to focus down to 12 feet. This camera is a classic piece of photography equipment that was originally designed as a press camera, and it’s sturdy build and fine craftsmanship make it an ideal camera for both the serious photographer and hobby camera buff.
