  • Music from the first two Sherlock Holmes Granada TV series starring Jeremy Brett

Patrick Gowers wrote much of the soundtrack music for these TV productions. The music on the CD is high class and evocative of the action it accompanies. The pieces are often Variations on the original theme although often you need to listen carefully to recognise the source. Some pieces are particularly beautiful or evocative. My favourites include Libera Me from the Priory School episode where it is sung in the school Chapel, and The Death of Sherlock Holmes from the Final Problem which conveys the melancholy in minor key. Mr Henry Baker's Christmas from The Blue Carbuncle is good fun as is Holmes in Europe. But there are lots of other gems which need to be listened to. The only caution is that you need to be familiar with the TV episodes from The Adventures (Series !) and The Return (series 2) to fully appreciate the CD. The music is played by top notch musicians with lovely violin playing and where needed accompanied by St Paul's Cathedral Choir. The CD was not cheap but I felt it was worth it!
