It is an old-style scanner with a top that swings all the way back so a thick book can be laid on the scanning surface. Most scanners today don't allow this. Also HP provides drivers for LInuxOS more often than other scanner manufacturers. I checked on the Xsane website that lists scanners that work with Linux and found the Scanjet 3300c listed. I bought this for £25 + carriage. It is in good condition and was recognised by my Linux Mint PC without my having to download and install another driver. So now I can scan documents and pages from old books, and do OCR using Tesseract, without worries.
