  • Still going strong...

Now going on for 11 years old, the Plustek OpticFilm 7200 can still deliver very acceptable scans of 35mm negatives and transparencies, especially when used with the current version of SilverFast which I was fortunate to be able to download at no extra cost. I'm using it with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and suitable drivers are easy to obtain; I understand it will also work with Windows 10. It is not the fastest of scanners, this being made very evident by the need to manually advance each frame; the sturdy carriers take either 4 mounted slides or up to 6 frames of film. Prescans take about 17 seconds and a resolution of 1500x1200 pixels takes around 38 seconds; for a full, massive resolution of 7200x5800, you can expect to wait for nearly 2 and a half minutes. It is worth the wait though as focus is sharp and contrast is excellent. While the later models are speedier to operate, you will have to pay quite a bit more for the privilege. Provided you are not in a great hurry, this little gem will do very nicely and is certainly superior to a flatbed scanner like my Canon 8400F when it comes to edge-to-edge sharpness.
