    Uncomplicated and capable

Although not said to be of great solidity is is fine for amateurs and studio use and if you're careful it will handle most pro work too. Combined with a particular Canon (or cheap knock-off) TTL lead it will provide TTL off camera and/or be used as a remote slave (fired by on camera flash) or used on camera in commander mode to fire other remote flashes. Unfortunately this flash (actually a generic made by Sunpac and re-badged) is equipped with infrared focus assist light but Fuji X cameras (up to XT1) cannot use it so AF in very dim light can be a little hit and miss. With those few caveats and with its greater power output I rate this higher than the more expensive but less powerful Fuji EF 32. Note: Fuji X cameras up to XT1 are not equipped for high speed flash so on bright days when fill flash is required you'll need to make use of on lens neutral density filters to reduce the exposure enough to use X synch of 1/180 sec with a wide (fast) aperture.

Fujifilm EF-42 flashgun for Fuji X Digital Cameras

I bought this flash new from a private seller at less than a third of the RRP I'm beginning to see why he let it go so cheaply!! although the EF-42 works fine in the hotshoe of my 3 Fuji X mirrorless cameras an X-T1 and a pair of X-E2's the problems start when you want to be more creative and go to use the '42 off camera and retain full TTL capabilities? in short it cant be done!! the little EF-8 flash that comes as standard with the X-T1 and X-T2 cameras and acts really as a pop up flash similiar to other DSLR's cannot be used as a flash slave and transmit full TTL flash signals to the '42 from the camera, I've seen and read various discussions on this subject on lots of online camera groups and several people recommend Canon's remote cords and yes they work upto a point but only in manual mode, you lose full TTL capability!! I've also used Nikon since 1971 and at present use D3s and D3 cameras plus SB800 flash guns and full TTL capability is maintained off camera with the Nikon SC28 TTL cord, trust me everything is seamless!! Fujifilm on the other hand do not make or provide anything similar for the X mirrorless system which l consider a serious setback to the otherwise superb Fuji X range of camera and lens system, the only solution I've found that works well is a Hahnel Capture Trigger that sits in the hotshoe and a Capture Receiver fitted to the EF-42 flash and its available as a kit with full Fuji X fitting, as a stand alone flash the EF-42 certainly doesn't justify a new UK £200.00 price tag for various reasons other than I've already pointed out, there is no push on diffuser supplied, you have to purchase a Stofen diffusser or similar 3rd party diffuser to fit, the screw on foot should be metal and not plastic which isn't really strong enough for constant use, and last of all this gun is manufactured by the Sunpak Corporation and is identical to the Sunpak PZ42X available in all TTL fittings except strangely a Fuji one and is far cheaper ironically to purchase brand new!! to sum up the EF-42 is fine if all you want is a gun you just fit on top of your camera and just fire away but anything else is hard work and would advise you buy this gun 2nd hand, its certainly not worth the full RRP!!!

  • Fujifilm EF-42 flash

I bought it used, with some scratches but at a very reasonable price. So far I didn't have an extensive experiences with it but enough to I consider it pretty good flash. Quick recycle time, long range, easy to use and works perfectly with my Finepix HS50. It's a very good combination. I took different pictures using this flash and rarely as direct light, usually as a reflected from other surfaces. The results were as expected - correctly exposed, giving nice, soft shadows and making photographed object looking good. It was possible with this flash because it is powerful enough to support that. Of course there are limits but in most situation it works wonders. Direct flash always gives hard shadows and feeling that an object is ... flat. Combining existing light with an aid of this flash creates more natural looking results. I truly like it. And finally, depending on the batteries used it can last very long too.

  • EF 42 Fuji flash

Does what it say on the box. Designed for the Fuji camera so has lots of compatibility such as auto zoom and exposure. Very easy to use, point and shoot. Bought a compatible cable to go with it so I can use the flash off the hot shoe on the end of a cable. The radio remote flash units do not work with this unit as they do not have the TTL but the cable works fine and allows you to change the point of the flash rather than it being stuck on the top of the camera.

  • Super useful for Fuji cameras without a built in flash

Did not have high expectations as this flash gets so-so reviews online, however, I'm not sure what the issue is. It is well built, well featured and easy to use. Only criticisms are that it is a little bulky for its output and the controls, whilst logical, require multiple presses to get to the required settings. Otherwise it's great

  • Nice little flash

This is my second one & it works just as good as the other. Nice quality light and very accurate. I use them on my two X-S1 cameras, which pairs very well. They even shut off automatically, when you turn off the cameras. That is a nice touch, just in case you forget to turn the flash off. These are very light and excellent for travel.

  • Fuji ef42 first impressions

Smaller than a cactus rf60 and bigger than a nissin I40 but still fits in your pocket , ttl is great and when I get my Canon off camera cord I'll be using it even more , nimh batteries improve cycle times , external power Jack would be a useful addition , still very good value used , Mike

  • Well made and accurate

If you can buy this cheap then it's a no brainier...the list price is silly. Made by another flash maker and with a fuji logo put on to it and sold silly price. Work's well and does the job well.., good used by if cheap.

Yes I spent weeks looking into different makes of flashguns even the cheap Chinese ones. But as the price of this one was so good and it’s designed for all my Fuji Cameras Anyway.
