About this product

Product Information

An irresistible account of some of history's most illustrious - and iniquitous - figures, from one of our best-loved historians. John Julius Norwich expertly examines the history of the oldest continuing institution in the world, tracing the papal line down the centuries from St Peter to the present Of the 280-odd holders of the supreme office, some have unquestionably been saints; others have wallowed in unspeakable immorality. One was said to have been a woman, her sex being revealed only when she improvidently gave birth to a baby during a papal procession. Almost as shocking was Formosus whose murdered corpse was exhumed, clothed in pontifical vestments, propped up on a throne and subjected to trial. From the glories of Byzantium to the decay of Rome, from the Albigensian Heresy to controversy within the Church today, The Popes is superbly written, witty and revealing. 'Charming and learned...The prose is elegant, the witticisms are plentiful, and the volume's enthusiasm is addictive.' Jonathan Wright, BBC History Magazine

  • Interesting Book

This book covers 2,000 years of European history from a unique angle. Major figures such as Henry VIII and Napoleon make brief appearances in a larger picture of the passage of time. Occasionally it is a little difficult to remember who everybody is but given the number of them and the repeated use of names this is only to be expected. However, this is an absorbing and reelatory read.

  • On the ball.

I really thought this book was going to be funny, but so far (and I haven't got far) it's not and I'm finding it quite hard going. Otherwise the book is in good condition and no doubt I'll gradually get through it. I have read J.J.Norwich before and found him amusing.

  • Comprehensive, yet manageable in small sections.

A comprehensive history of the popes which you don't need to read from Page 1 onwards-you can dip in anywhere and then read as little or as much as you like for a snapshot of the period you have chosen. Intelligently written.
