not impressed
This year I was late putting down my crabgrass pre-emergent. As a result, I have some raging crabgrass trying to take over my Bermuda lawn. So I was looking for something that would kill the crabgrass, and not kill my Bermuda. Years ago I would use MSMA to control crabgrass, but thanks to some extreme tree-huggers it's no longer available.
I read some raving reviews about Drive XLR8 on the internet, so I decided to try it. I ordered a bottle along with MSO to go along with it, because according to the label, this stuff doesn't work without MSO... My question to the producers is, if you have to use another product to make yours effective, why don't you sell them together?? To me that's a no-brainer!
Ok, Back to the review: So when the products arrived I read the label, and applied it just as it is described. After a couple of days I noticed my bermuda lawn starting to lose its green color, and a little bit of the crabgrass starting to turn purple (the color crabgrass turns before it dies). Two weeks after the application I looked at the lawn, and honestly there may have been a 5% kill rate on the crabgrass, and the bermuda was tan and stressed, At that point I decided to try another application of Drive XLR8 on the front yard only, and I switch to Image on the back yard. I just wanted to compare the two, just to see how well each worked.
One week after my 2nd application of XLR8, the front yard bermuda was extremely yellowed and streaked, but the crabgrass is still there. The back yard (treated with Image) had a much better kill rate of crabgrass, and was NOT as stressed as the front.
I will not waste my money on XLR8 again. I will stick with another product. And next year I will make sure and get 2 applications of pre-emergent down way before the soil temp gets to 70 degrees (when crabgrass germinates)!!
I would not recommend this product for anyone in the southeastern part of the US with bermuda. Maybe it works better on other turf grasses? Or maybe it works better in different parts of the country? But I was not impressed on my Bermuda lawn, located in Alabama.
